Sorry about missing the Tuesday post, but I spent a while writing this one. Now here's a pretty science fiction theory and thought for you: what if your brain could influence reality? Well, it turns out, it kind of can. Continue reading for more information.
Everyone has heard of "ESP" or psychic powers from movies and tv shows, but there's no way for that to be real. Until recently, this was the obvious answer. However, some research was done that revealed something nobody expected: consciousness could possibly influence the real world.
One university (a friend showed the research paper to me a few days ago and now I don't remember what university it was) did a study on learning behavior after making the observation of a flock of birds learning a behavior in one country then another flock learning the same behavior in a different location. They then did a study on the speed at which people are able to solve a crossword puzzle. The puzzle started in New York from the New York Times and the average completion time was recorded. The locations and average time it took to solve the puzzle were also recorded across the U.S. The researchers saw that as more people solved the puzzle, the average time decreased. While this in itself isn't definitive proof, it is something to take note of.
But it doesn't end there. Another study done by Princeton University shows something similar. A random number generator was set up in a few locations of high population throughout the world. The generator produced a random number every second and recorded them for a period of four years. On September 11, 2011, the variance of the mean increased greatly. Up to the few hours before the attack, the variance was usually within 2000. About an hour before the attacks begun, the variance in the mean began to rise. As the attacks occurred, the variance on the means of the devices was at it's peak, around 6000. As the attacks ended, the variance dropped, but it stayed relatively high until after the reporting died down. The data was shown to be not caused by any physical interaction, thus it suggests that the human consciousness had some influence on the random numbers the devices generated. SOURCE
Another study that is planned is a community study from a free mobile app. Entangled (link here) is an app that takes a deeper look into human consciousness by allowing participants to take place in large scale experiments and help improve the app and research. It is planned to launch early this year, but there is still a bit of work that is needed.
This new frontier in science and psychology holds what could possibly be the answer to many, many questions science has yet to answer or isn't entirely sure about. Imagine a world where magic exists and is just a matter of knowing how to use it. Now imagine if that was our world, and this research is the new frontier. What if manipulating matter and the world around us with our minds is not only possible, but occurs every day?
