Human Augmentation

It is the 21st century and you could go to get pretty much anything done at a medical institute. Would you opt in to replace a few limbs, get implants, or not do anything to yourself? Read more to find out.

Osteoarthritis is arthritis caused by repetitive movements, stress, injury, overuse, and impact. Let's say you have osteoarthritis in your right hip, but it isn't very severe. You could go down to your local hospital to get a medication or have your hip replaced with a ceramic or titanium joint.

Or you could have your entire leg replaced instead.

Why have an organic human leg that will get tired and injured when you can just have a whole new leg or set of legs that are far superior to your own legs? If you went with getting robotic legs, you could be able to run, walk, jump and lift much more than anyone else. How is this possible? Since the legs are not powered by your human muscles, but instead motors and a battery, you are only limited by the strength of the motors and the life of the batteries. This also opens the door to modifications-- if you are tech savvy enough, you could probably decide to void the warranty and replace the motors in your prosthesis with one's better suited to what you want to do.

However, it would take a long rehabilitation process before you are able to walk again. It would also mean letting go of your perfectly functional human legs that you were born with. If you would be okay with losing a part of yourself that was completely fine and undamaged and would be fine with the rehabilitation, then maybe you would want to look into it.

But what about implants? Well that is already being done. Joint replacements, pacemakers, dental implants and stints are all implanted into the human body today, but because they are correcting a problem. Maybe you could go in and have your lungs improved by getting a filter implanted in your windpipe that filters out toxic particles and dust, however it would need to be replaced every once in a while.

With the release of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, we get a look into what this world could look like. All the augmented segregated from the non-augmented people could prove to be demoralizing to the population who do have prosthetic limbs and implants. In this era there is no separation, possibly because not very many individuals have decided to just replace their functional limbs with bionic ones. The few people who do have implants and artificial limbs are classified as "disabled," for the most part. Wouldn't it be nice for all of those who need prosthetic limbs to be able to have full and total control like they had with their original human limbs? Not all of those who need or want replacements can afford the futuristic technology required for this to be a reality.

What do you think? Would you replace a limb or get implants in hopes of improving your life, or would you want to keep your functional organic body? Let me know in the comments below.
